  Why We Exist
House In The Wood provides an opportunity for children and teens from inner city families in Chicago to benefit from the outdoor camp or education experience. Since 1910, our summer camp uses traditional camp activities, to provide campers with positive alternatives to negative urban lifestyles. We believe that individuals can choose only from among alternatives that are known to them.

At House In The Wood, there exists a unique opportunity for children, teens and adults with varying family backgrounds to live together, encounter new experiences and grow as individuals. At camp, alternatives are presented in every aspect of daily camp life and practiced within small group and individual relationships.

And more recently...we have started an Outdoor Education Center to support outdoor resident environmental education for our Rowe Elementary School in Chicago. Third thorough eighth grade will attend House In The Wood for a week of outdoor lessons in science, math, social studies and team building. In addition, they will learn the fine art of getting along with other people and building solid friendships while in their cabins.

What we do during the Summer
During the summer, we offer six to eight sessions of camp for our various groups. See the calendar for specific dates. We have year around Mentors Program for teens, Family Camp, Summer Adventure Camp, and our regular one week and two week sessions for children 7 to 12 years old.

All of our sessions except Summer Adventure Camp are open to any Chicago resident. Summer Adventure Camp is our Settlement's Day Camp program for children ages 5 to 12.

Our program emphasizes small group interaction with a focus on effective communication and conflict resolution skills. We offer the following activities: swimming, boating, outdoor living skills, campouts, cookouts, nature activities, arts, crafts, drama, dance and music, games, sports, and a peer mediation program.

Our sliding fees for our city of Chicago families are based on income and expenses. This allows our families who would not normally be able to afford to go to camp the opportunity to do so.  Some of our Chicago residents pay full price or are assisted by either the Title XX aid program or another agency.

We have 35 summer employees to help us accomplish our goals. Our staff are typically college aged men and women from the Midwest and abroad. All of our staff arrive at camp with some experience and then we train them for 10 days to help them learn their job. We start our summer hiring in January.   What we do in Spring
Our first group of scholars from Rowe Elementary Charter School in Chicago arrived April 2011. We had a week-long outdoor education adventure with 30 scholars and two teachers from third grade. We had outdoor lessons in animals, birds, forest, marsh, prairie, conservation, astronomy, early settlers, and a plot study. We wrapped it all up with skits on our last night at House In The Wood. We had trail groups of 10 children with a trail leader and teacher or other staff in each group. In the evening, scholars would return to their cabins to get ready for bed and talk about the day with their counselor. In the cabin, they also learned about cleaning their cabin, getting along with their classmates and organizing themselves for the day ahead. This is just the first year of scholars from Rowe. We will eventually have grades third through eighth from Rowe Elementary for a week long experience at House In The Wood. Watch us grow!

What we do the rest of the year
We spend a significant amount of the rest of the year preparing for the spring and summer. Before the spring, we plan our curriculum for the Outdoor Ed Center or our programs for our Summer Camp. We plan staff training, improve our facilities, and hire our spring/summer staff. And, after the summer, we evaluate our entire spring/summer operation using the feedback of staff, parents, teachers, scholars and campers. In addition to our spring/summer program, we have weekends for our regular Settlement programs like Head Start and After School.

At House In The Wood, there exists a unique opportunity for children, teens and adults with varying family backgrounds to live together, encounter new experiences and grow as individuals. At camp, alternatives are presented in every aspect of daily camp life and practiced within small group and individual relationships.

We operate a full service retreat center that is open to groups who are interested in a private facility with good food in a simple but beautiful setting. Click on retreat center for more information about the how-to's of renting our facility and rate information or facility for more information about our lodging, meeting space and grounds.
